Freet Urban AYR Barefoot vegan shoes! First impressions & 2 week update.

Well, it certainly has been a while since I utilised this platform to discuss something. I am back to review something a little different. In the not so distant past I discovered barefoot friendly shoes when looking for baby shoes (yes, I had a baby) and joined some Facebook groups and before long I was sold on the idea. Generally speaking I hate shoes, at home even in the middle of winter I can be found with unshod feet. I have been known to do short walks outdoors with no footwear too. I was lucky enough to stumble across a group which based on my feet (I found a foot twin) recommend some shoes. So without further ado;

Meet my new Freet shoes Urban AYR 2 . The company produces only vegan footwear (I think) that is all “barefoot”.  In summary, this means the soles are thin so you can feel the ground, super flexible on both length and width, the toe box is broad allowing the toes to spread and they’re totally flat “zero drop”. That’s a super short summary, if you’re interested join this group – Barefoot shoes Facebook group

In reality, they’re amazingly comfy and do feel like I’m walking basically unshod all whilst my feet are protected from the elements. Historically I have always kicked my shoes off at every single possible time, even at my work desk to allow my feet to flex etc. Alas, no need in these even as a serial shoe remover I wore these all day with the utmost comfort. I have Joint Hypermobility Syndrome as well as a Rheumatoid Arthritis so I was naturally a little sceptical about walking without padding but these shoes actually have a thin layer of shock absorber in the insole which works beautifully.  I have now walked 11 miles on hard ground in these and I am sold, i love them. Granted they’re ugly but I love that look, I’m a heathen who likes crocs so maybe fashion advice isn’t my forte.  So my first impressions are great.

Sizing is a bit odd if I’m honest. You will need to size up for a good fit. My post baby feet are usually a size EU 40, I’m wearing a 42 which is a roomy but perfect for thick socks fit. My feet measure 26cm with a plus12 and that just fits the shoe – my actual foot is 24.8cm. They’re also super broad at the toe box, a good thing.

Full review later 🙂

2 week update

I can confirm these shoes are comfy so much so that they’re all I’ve worn. I’ve walked around 5 miles per day and had 3 days at work. Two days have involved copious precipitation, thus I can comment on their performance. No leaks, due to low sides jumping in puddles is ill advised. Naturally, I’ve jumped in puddles to see how long they take to dry – watch this space for that. Also, aesthetically speaking the uppers have a satisfying crease now.
